Je sens le feu

My granny rushed up the stairs to warn me of the smell of fire, and left my room. I immediately turned to lay fully on my bed and swept the covers over me in one motion. I thought, “If the fires are to take me, let it be. I am yet young, and death may cross my path if it so pleases. Besides, I have no responsibility to anyone or anything in this world. If I did for a change, maybe I would actually be in it.”

I then rested with my eyes closed for but a moment before my mind raced with the words you have here read. I removed myself from the path to slumber to then type such thoughts into existence. Later, upon reviewing the piece, I realised perhaps the irony that lay therein. I did open my eyes for something — to tell everyone how I open my eyes for nothing.
